Hi guys, I hope you’re ready for one more inFlux English Podcast! If you’ve been following our posts, you must know that we’ve been talking about errors that native speakers make and why and how we should learn them.

Well, considering the way we speak Portuguese, it’s easy to understand how people speak English, that is, not the same way they write. When talking, we tend to shorten words, so we communicate faster. That’s the whole point: it’s too long to say, for example, “who would have thought it?”, and so they say “who would’ve thought it?” or even “who woulda thought it?“.

There are many other situations in which that happens. So, today, we’ll talk about the combination should have. Those two words, when spoken in a sentence, usually sound like this: [?????], shoulda or [?????v], should uhv. And again, once people listen to “should uhv” they write should of (with an “o-f”) instead of should’ve (with “v-e”). Do you know why that happens? Well, because it sounds the same!

Listen to some sentences now, paying attention to the pronunciation and notice how people use these words.

You should’ve asked permission before entering the room. Você deveria ter pedido permissão antes de entrar na sala.

You should’ve told me you were going there, I could’ve gone with you. Você deveria ter me falado que você estava indo lá, eu poderia ter ido com você.

You should’ve waited! Você deveria ter esperado!

Tell me how it should’ve ended. Diga-me como deveria ter acabado.

I should’ve listened to your advice. Eu deveria ter ouvido seu conselho.

They should’ve gone. They missed so much. Eles deveriam ter ido. Eles perderam tanta coisa.

We should’ve visited her. Now it’s too late. Nós deveríamos ter visitado ela. Agora é tarde demais.

Honestly, you should’ve told me. De verdade, você devia ter me dito.

You may have realized that should have pretty much means deveria ter, deveríamos ter, deveriam ter. But there are a few situations where the translation in Portuguese changes a bit. Listen up:

You should’ve known better. Você já devia saber.

I should’ve seen it coming! Eu deveria saber que isso iria acontecer!

I should’ve guessed. Eu devia ter imaginado.

There is something else to be considered here. The combination might have can sometimes be used in the same way as should have. And it’s usually pronounced like this: mighta or might uhv.

I might’ve known he wouldn’t come. Eu deveria saber que ele não viria.

Honestly, you might’ve told me. De verdade, você devia ter me dito.

I might’ve guessed. Eu devia ter imaginado.

In our next Podcast we’ll talk about another situation that might have is commonly used. Stay plugged and post a comment in case you have any questions!

Bye for now!
